Baltimore Congressional Delegation Announces $1.1 Million for Canton Railroad Company
U.S. Senators Chris Van Hollen and Ben Cardin and Representatives Elijah E. Cummings, Dutch Ruppersberger, and John Sarbanes (all D-Md.) issued the following statement announcing $1.1 million in federal funding for the Canton Railroad Company from the Department of Transportation (DOT). These funds will go towards the Canton Railroad Company’s Switch Replacement Project which will benefit the surrounding communities by bringing about safer and more reliable freight rail service. The Canton Railroad Company provides critical links between the Port of Baltimore and the Class 1 railroads. After last week’s INFRA award to upgrade the Howard St. Tunnel, this award brings additional updates and improvements to freight rail services in Baltimore.
“For over 100 years, the Canton Railroad Company has been a key part of the freight and shipping industry in Baltimore,” the Members wrote. “Modernizing our transportation infrastructure is key to Maryland’s economic success and this funding will allow the Canton Railroad Company to install new switches and continue to provide safe, efficient, and dependable service.”
This DOT grant will be awarded through the Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvements Grant Program. The program funds various types of railway infrastructure projects that aim to improve safety, efficiency, and reliability of intercity passenger and freight rail systems.
