Baltimore Delegation Members Announce More Than $2.8 Million for Head Start Programs Across Region

Today, U.S. Senators Chris Van Hollen and Ben Cardin and Congressmen Dutch Ruppersberger, John Sarbanes, and Kweisi Mfume (all D-Md.) announced $2,809,748 in federal funding for Head Start programs at the Y of Central Maryland and Community Action Council of Howard County.

“Early childhood education provides our children with a strong foundation at a young age and positions students for lifelong success,” the lawmakers said. “These federal funds will help more families in the Baltimore area access Head Start programs, which have a proven track record of narrowing educational and economic gaps in our society. We will keep fighting for federal investments in Maryland’s early childhood education system to ensure that every child has the opportunity to succeed.”

Awards include $1,723,642 in new funding for the Y of Central Maryland and $1,086,106 in continuation funding for the Community Action Council of Howard County. Funds were awarded through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

The lawmakers, who also announced $6 million for Head Start and Early Head Start programs at the Y of Central Maryland in July, have supported increased funding for Head Start programs throughout Maryland. Head Start and Early Head Start programs provide services to more than a million children every year, in every U.S. state and territory, in farmworker camps, and in over 155 tribal communities.
