Trump Announces Support for Bipartisan Senate Deal to Reopen Government

Today U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen applauded President Trump’s announcement that he will support the stopgap funding framework that the Senator announced yesterday with U.S. Senators Ben Cardin (D-Md.), Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), Susan Collins (R-Maine), Mark Warner (D-Va.), Tim Kaine (D-Va.), Chris Coons (D-Del.), Angus King (I-Maine), Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), Johnny Isakson (R-Ga.), and Cory Gardner (R-Colo.).

“This legislation will finally end this shutdown, get 800,000 federal workers paid and back to work, and allow Congress and the President to move forward with negotiations for a longer-term funding deal. I’m pleased President Trump has backed our bipartisan proposal, and I urge my colleagues to vote on the legislation today. We need to end the longest shutdown in our history and get back to the work of the American people,” said Senator Van Hollen.

The legislation will immediately provide civil servants with the back pay they missed during the shutdown, in line with Senators Van Hollen and Cardin’s legislation that has already been signed into law. They are also pushing for federal service contractors to also receive back pay.
