Van Hollen, Alsobrooks, Maryland Delegation Members Host Rally at SSA; Call for Protecting Integrity of Social Security, Medicare, & Medicaid Amid Reports of DOGE Interference
Yesterday, U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen, joined by Senator Angela Alsobrooks and Representatives Kweisi Mfume, Johnny Olszewski, and Sarah Elfreth (all D-Md.), held a rally outside of the Social Security Administration (SSA) Headquarters in Baltimore to call for protecting the integrity of Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid following reports that DOGE has accessed the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and intends to access SSA next. The lawmakers were joined by union members, including Jessica LaPointe and Rich Couture, President and Spokesperson of the AFGE Council 220 respectively, and concerned citizens as they underscored the dangers that DOGE interference poses to the integrity of Americans’ social security and health care benefits while emphasizing their steadfast support for the dedicated civil servants who deliver these essential services.
“Over the last 21 days, we have seen Elon Musk conducting illegal raids on federal agencies with his DOGE crew. They have accessed highly sensitive personal information on Americans at the Department of Treasury, including Social Security numbers, bank accounts, and other very sensitive information,” Senator Van Hollen said at the rally.
“This is a pattern that we see going on, and we have word, there have been news reports, that their next stop – after the Department of Education where they’ve been, after NOAA, after CMS for Medicare – is going to be the Social Security Administration,” he continued.
“We have one simple message, which is: Elon Musk, keep your hands off of our Social Security,” he said in closing.
Senator Van Hollen was joined at the rally by supporters from Social Security Works, AFGE, the National Committee to Protect Social Security and Medicare, People’s Action, Progressive Maryland, Alliance for Retired Americans, MoveOn, Indivisible, Public Citizen, and more.
