Today, U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) was announced as the Ranking Member of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, Science and Related Agencies. This subcommittee includes jurisdiction over funding for NASA; the Department of Justice, including the FBI; the Department of Commerce, including the Minority Business Development Agency, NIST, NOAA, and the Census Bureau; and many other critical federal agencies. In addition to the Appropriations Committee, the Senator will continue to serve on the Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee; Budget Committee; and Foreign Relations Committee. A full list of the Senator’s subcommittee assignments is available below, as well as the jurisdiction of the Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies Subcommittee.
The Senator released the following statement regarding his move to serve as the leading Democrat on the Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies Subcommittee:
“Serving on the Appropriations Committee has given me the opportunity to secure critical funds for both our national and Maryland priorities. As the new Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies, I look forward to an expanded role in overseeing funding for the many critical agencies that call Maryland home – including the future FBI headquarters, NIST, NOAA, the Census Bureau, and NASA Goddard – as well as many outside Maryland that provide crucial services to the American people. I’m lucky to follow in the footsteps of another great Marylander who served in this capacity on the subcommittee – Senator Barbara Mikulski.
“In this role, I will continue to be laser-focused on supporting investments that create an economy that works for all Americans, including by advancing innovation in science and technology. I will also continue to work to build a justice system that supports public safety and protects the rights of every American. I look forward to partnering closely with my counterpart, Senator Moran, to deliver critical investments in our communities and our nation.”
