Van Hollen Announces Prince George’s County Executive Alsobrooks as State of the Union Guest
Today, U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) announced that Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks will be his guest for President Biden’s State of the Union Address tomorrow evening. Prior to the State of the Union, the Senator and County Executive Alsobrooks will meet to discuss their shared priorities for expanding opportunity and growing prosperity in Prince George’s County and Maryland. The Senator and County Executive will discuss the many ways they are already working together to do just that – including the delivery of significant federal funds to projects around the County through key initiatives like the American Rescue Plan, Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, PACT Act, and Inflation Reduction Act.
“From the first day President Biden took office, Democrats in Congress have worked with him to build back our economy stronger than ever and to ensure greater and more shared prosperity for all Americans. County Executive Alsobrooks has brought the same inclusive vision to her work, and I’ve been glad to partner with her as she has steered the County through tough times and toward better days. We have teamed up to support vital priorities, including modernizing our infrastructure, caring for our veterans, protecting our environment, and promoting public safety. As we keep working to invest in our communities, it’s great to have her join me to hear President Biden present his vision for continued progress toward building a better America for all,” said Senator Van Hollen.
“Senator Van Hollen has been a tremendous partner and is a fierce advocate for Prince Georgians and Marylanders, securing $2 million for infrastructure improvements for Suitland Road and $32 million to build a Community-Based Outpatient Clinic for our veterans, last year alone. I am honored and proud to be selected as his guest to attend the State of the Union, and look forward to hearing President Biden’s vision to move our nation forward,” said Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks.
Senator Van Hollen has worked with County Executive Alsobrooks to invest in Prince Georgians, including to:
- Deliver $32 million for a new Community-Based Outpatient Clinic in the southern part of the County through the PACT Act;
- Secure over $40 million in Congressionally Directed Spending for an array of local priorities such as public safety, workforce development, and transportation;
- Deliver major federal investments through the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, including $20.5 million for the expansion of the New Carrollton Station and $21 million for safety and accessibility improvements along County roadways and around transit hubs; and
- Advocate for Prince George’s County to serve as the new home for a consolidated suburban FBI headquarters as the federal government searches for new sites.
First elected County Executive of Prince George’s in 2018 as the first woman to hold the job, Alsobrooks has worked to foster inclusive economic growth, expand educational opportunity, and improve local government services for workers, families, and veterans. She navigated the County through the challenges of a devastating pandemic and presided over a strong recovery – in part leveraging significant federal resources that Senator Van Hollen worked to deliver through the American Rescue Plan, the infrastructure modernization law, and the PACT Act, among other federal laws. Under Alsobrooks’ leadership, the County has been the fastest growing and the top economic driver for the state of Maryland. In 2022, she was elected for a second term.
