Van Hollen, Brown, Capito Introduce Resolution to Designate Community School Coordinators Appreciation Week
Full-Service Community Schools that Provide Integrated Student Supports have been shown to Improve Student Outcomes
This week, U.S. Senators Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), Sherrod Brown (D-OH), Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV) introduced a resolution to designate the week of September 23 through September 27, 2019, as ``Community School Coordinators Appreciation Week''.
“Community schools not only provide our children with a quality education but also include crucial wrap-around services to improve students’ quality of life. The work that community school organizers do is essential to our kids’ success, and I’m proud to help recognize their efforts. I will continue working in Congress to provide the resources our state needs to ensure every Maryland child has access to a top-notch education and the opportunity to succeed,” said Senator Van Hollen.
“Community schools offer unique opportunities to students in Ohio and across the country,” said Brown. “Community schools make a real difference in the lives of students and their families. That’s the work of community school organizers is so important. Community schools are an efficient, evidence-based model for our public schools and I hope Congress will provide more resources so that local communities can adopt the model. ”
“In West Virginia and across the nation, community schools represent vital partnerships for our communities that are helping all involved achieve success,” Senator Capito said. “Community school coordinators are an essential element of that success, and I appreciate this opportunity to thank them for the work they do for our students, families, and communities.”
Full-service community schools are public schools that provide integrated student supports, such as counseling, medical and dental services, and transportation are associated with improving student outcomes in areas such as attendance, social and emotional functioning, and academic achievement. Community school coordinators work with the community and non-profits to identify and source additional resources to benefit students and their families.
