Van Hollen Calls on Trump’s Removal From Office

Today, U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) released the following statement calling for President Trump’s removal from office:

“Early this morning, our democracy prevailed. Despite President Trump’s calls for insurrection, his contempt for the Constitution, and his lawless conduct, our institutions and the will of the American people held firm. But every day Trump remains in office presents a grave danger to our republic.

“Make no mistake — what we witnessed yesterday was no accident. The President ignited this fire and the complicity of far too many Republican members of Congress fueled these flames. I never thought I would see this type of attack on our Capitol and our democracy — both from without and within.

“The President has repeatedly violated his most sacred responsibility to protect the American people. And yesterday he incited more violence — resulting in the loss of life and putting the lives of countless other Americans and the future of our democracy at risk.

“While there are only thirteen days left of his presidency, each day Trump remains a ticking time bomb aimed at the heart of our democracy. Moreover, we must establish a clear precedent that this kind of seditious conduct is unacceptable. That is why I support his immediate removal from office.”
