Van Hollen, Cardin, Mfume Announce More Than $2.7 Million for Baltimore City Health Department to Combat HIV

Today, U.S. Senators Chris Van Hollen and Ben Cardin and Congressmen Kweisi Mfume (all D-Md.) announced $2,720,663 in federal funding for the Baltimore City Health Department to provide HIV treatment and improve quality of life for low-income patients.

The funding comes through the Department of Health and Human Service’s ongoing Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program Part A HIV Emergency Relief Grant Program (RWHAP). With this award, the project will be funded through February 2024.

“More than 10,000 people in Baltimore are living with HIV. In particular, Black Baltimoreans have historically experienced high rates of transmission and increased barriers to care,” said the lawmakers. “While HIV transmission has slowed in recent years, it is critical that our residents have everything they need to stay healthy. This program helps ensure that racial equity is at the heart of our healthcare system and that more Marylanders will get the care they need.”

The goal of RWHAP is to provide optimal HIV care and treatment to patients who are low-income, uninsured and underserved.
