Van Hollen, Cardin Submit Direct Funding Requests for Community Projects Supporting Economic and Small Business Development
Today, U.S. Senators Chris Van Hollen and Ben Cardin (both D-Md.) announced their direct federal funding requests for Maryland community projects under the Financial Services and General Government Appropriations Subcommittee for fiscal year 2023. The Senators worked with local community leaders to identify these projects, which will support local economic development, position small businesses for future growth, and provide more opportunity for Marylanders.
“Direct federal investments can play an important role in growing our economy, creating jobs, and supporting our workers, small businesses, and nonprofits. That’s why we’ve worked together with local partners to identify projects that will benefit Marylanders and our communities – from expanding opportunities for workers to providing help to historically underserved small businesses. We’ll be fighting to get these priorities through Congress and deliver these funds directly to our state,” said Senator Van Hollen, a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee and Chairman of the Subcommittee on Financial Services and General Government.
“Team Maryland is united in our ongoing effort to bring new federal resources back to Maryland based on local needs and priorities. We are committed to building on successes realized during the pandemic to directly address the historic challenges that entrepreneurs in underserved communities face so they can start and grow their businesses and create jobs. These locally identified, priority projects will be transformative and expand the capacity of nonprofit organizations to serve Black-owned, women-owned, veteran-owned and minority-owned entrepreneurs,” said Senator Cardin, Chair of the Senate Small Business and Entrepreneurship Committee. “Our goal is to maximize taxpayer dollars in the most meaningful way for our communities.”
The annual Financial Services and General Government appropriations bill – which Senator Van Hollen leads as Chairman of the Subcommittee – funds important efforts to promote economic growth and small business development in disadvantaged and low-income communities in Maryland. For example, this legislation funds the Treasury Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFI) Fund, which supports a variety of projects from increasing healthy food access in food deserts to investing in affordable housing. It also funds various U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) programs such as Entrepreneurial Development grants and Small Business Development Centers.
While not all requests may receive funding in the final fiscal year 2023 funding legislation, the Senators will advocate for their requests to be included as the Appropriations subcommittees draft their respective bills over the coming months. Fiscal year 2023 begins October 1, 2022. For fiscal year 2022, Senators Cardin and Van Hollen secured over $104 million in direct investments to benefit Maryland.
