Van Hollen Statement on Great Mills High School Shooting
Today U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen issued the following statement on the Great Mills High School shooting:
“Today I joined the St. Mary’s County Sheriff and School Superintendent at a briefing to show solidarity with the Great Mills High School community and to express gratitude to the first responders. No student should go to class fearing that they will be killed and no parent should live in fear that their children will never return from school. No one should be afraid that they will die from gunfire in our neighborhoods.
“My heart is with the students, parents, teachers, and the entire St. Mary’s community. But while words can express our feelings, only action will reduce gun violence and save lives. That’s why Congress must take common-sense steps to stop the epidemic of gun violence. The GOP leadership must respect the American people and allow the Senate and House to vote on sensible gun-safety measures.
“On Saturday, I will be joining students and millions of Americans across the nation for the March for Our Lives. We cannot allow the cries of survivors and students to be drowned out by the gun lobby.”
