Van Hollen Statement on New Health Care Proposal in Maryland

Today, U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen issued the following statement on the new health insurance 'down payment' proposal to help uninsured Maryland residents get health care coverage, which was introduced this morning by State Senator Brian Feldman, State Delegate Joseline Pena-Melnyk, and the Maryland Health Care for All! Coalition:

"President Trump and Congressional Republicans have been relentless in their attacks on our health care system. With their recent repeal of the individual mandate - which helps to ensure that all Americans are in the health care system and paying their fair share - we expect to see insurance costs will increase and 13 million fewer people will be insured.

"Maryland has long been a leader in expanding health care access. Today, state lawmakers are putting forward a new idea that will enable residents to put a 'down payment' towards their future health insurance costs - while stabilizing the overall individual market and lowering costs. This is an innovative proposal that moves the conversation forward as we look to provide quality, affordable health care to all Marylanders."
