Van Hollen Statement on Passage of Republican Budget Paving the Way for a Massive Tax Giveaway to the Rich at the Expense of American Families

Today, U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) released the following statement on his opposition to the budget resolution passed by Senate Republicans early this morning that paves the way for their plan to provide a massive tax windfall to the ultra-rich while slashing vital public services for the American people:

“This budget plan is nothing short of a slap in the face to Americans who expected that Donald Trump and Republicans would focus on lowering costs. Instead of addressing the issues facing working families, this budget will provide trillions of dollars in tax cuts to the wealthy at the expense of everyone else. This comes as Trump saddles Americans with even higher costs through his broad, across-the-board tariffs, and Elon Musk takes a chainsaw to federal agencies responsible for delivering public services that millions of people rely on – from Social Security and Medicare to veterans’ services. My Democratic colleagues and I fought for amendments to protect against cuts to Medicaid, stop Trump’s tariff-driven national sales tax, reverse DOGE attacks on the Social Security Administration, and more, but Republicans blocked them at every turn.

“All of this amounts to the Great Betrayal of the American people. Donald Trump and Republicans are driving up the cost of living and rigging the government in favor of billionaires and corporations while leaving the rest of us to pay the price. The American people deserve much better. They deserve a government that works for them, and an economy where everyone has the opportunity to prosper – and that’s what we will continue to fight for.”
