Van Hollen Statement on the Passing of Arne Sorenson
Today, U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) released the following statement regarding the passing of Arne Sorenson, President, and CEO of Bethesda-based Marriott International:
“I am deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Arne Sorenson. Arne was not only a great leader for Marriott, he was a compassionate and caring leader in our community and country. Every time I spoke with Arne, he was focused on supporting the entire team of employees at Marriott and setting a standard of excellence by example. He also understood that Marriott was part of a greater community and encouraged everyone to help their neighbors in need. When I last spoke to him months ago, Arne was in the middle of battling cancer while trying to ease the economic pain being experienced by so many workers in the hospitality industry. That was Arne — thinking about others even when he was battling a deadly disease. Putting the team first.
“I extend my deepest sympathies to Arne’s wife, Ruth, his children, and the entire Marriott family and team during this difficult time. Arne will be greatly missed. His vision, drive, and perseverance will continue to be an inspiration to us all.”
